Kava - what is kava ?

Kava have been a popular crop in the Pacifc Islands for over a century. Its not just a plant its a cultural icon. Kava is deeply woven into the tradition and daily live of the people here. Whether its grown for subsistence or commercial purposes, kava hold a special place in the hearts of local folks. In Vanuatu, for example, villagers cultivate kava on there islands and sell the harvested plant to buyers in towns like Port Vila and Luganville. These buyers then supply cuttings to local kava bars where they’re sold for around 5 USD per kilogram

But kava is so much more then just a crop, its a way of life. Let me tell you why.

Why Do We Drink Kava?

Kava isnt just a drink; its a bridge to peace, relaxation, and connection. In Vanuatu we drink kava during traditional ceremonies, especially when resolving disputes. Picture this: two locals have a disagreement and the chief calls for a meeting at the nakamal (a traditional meeting place). Kava is served as the "juice of reconciliation", washing away tensions and allowing everyone to let go of their troubles. Its like the calming waves of the ocean soothing your soul.

We also enjoy kava in the evenigs to unwind after a long day of work, whether its tending to gardens in the village or dealing with the stresses of office life in town. And when visitors come to the village or our homes, serving kava is a gesture of good will and hospitability.

The Effects of Kava: A Natural High

If I had to describe the effects of kava in one phrase it would be a natural high. Imagine your entire body relaxing from your head down your back, all the way to your legs and feet. You feel calm, at ease and completely at peace. After few sips, you might notice a mild numbness in your mouth. Thats your cue to take a break for 10–15 minutes before your next sip.

In Vanuatu we serve kava in clean dried coconut shells. The effects kick in within 2–5 minutes and trust me, they are strong! Thats because the kava species we grow here, borogu and melomelo, is packed with kavalactones, the compounds responsible for kava's unique effects..

Kava for Health and Wellness

Did you know kava isnt just for relaxation? Its also used for its potential health benefits. Research has shown that kava can help with sleep disorders, stress and insomnia. Even more exciting, recent studies suggest it could be a potential remedy for serious conditions like ovarian cancer, leukemia and anxiety.

For example a study published in the National Library of Medicine found that kava has significant anti anxiety properties . Another study highlighted its potential in treating cancer and other chronic conditions (read more here to find out).

Why I Love Kava

For me, kava is the perfect way to end a hard day’s work. It’s not just about relaxation—it’s about connection. Whether you’re at a nakamal (kava bar) in Vanuatu or sharing a shell with friends, kava brings people together. It’s a tradition that’s stood the test of time, and I’m proud to be part of it.
